Stan Wawrinka on 2017, Federer vs. Nadal and his friendship with Andy Murray

But what about the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo?

I love tennis in Tokyo. I absolutely love Tokyo. I feel it’s an amazing city. I think the stadium will be spectacular. It’s full of vibrance and I think this year’s Olympics will be different, but I think it will be an extraordinary Olympics in Tokyo. It has been for the past three years, every conversation I have has been about Tokyo Olympics. So yeah, I think I will play there, I think I will play there in 2020, but I don’t know if it will be at the finals or the semi-finals.

Regarding the men’s singles tournament, you’re obviously very good friends with Andy Murray. We’ve seen some of his comments in recent weeks. How does he feel about you getting the opportunity to play the U.S. Open, playing Federer?

Andy obviously believes that he will be on the highest level ever and maybe he thinks “Okay, I am going to give it a run and I’m going to get beat.” But I think he will continue to fight. I don’t think it’s in his mind to give up. He will keep on believing. I think everyone has his back, Federer, Novak, everyone. Maybe Andy still doesn’t believe it and is still pulling for me.

Do you think Andy will come back next year? He’s going to do whatever it takes.

I was wondering that, too. I’m not sure. He might still come back next year and keep on fighting. I don’t know. I think he has such amazing mind and such unbelievable ability that I think it would be really special if he actually made it to Paris next year. It would be really special. And obviously I would love to see it, to watch Andy’s grand slam matches.

Is there a scenario where Federer would give you a win over him next year in Paris?

Not like that. I’m not dreaming of a win over Roger, but I’m sure he is in the same category with Rafael Nadal. He’s probably one of the best ever, right there. But I’m looking to win everything with Stan and Andy. The most important thing for me now is to stay healthy and play with my new teammates, and just win more. My favorite years are still ahead of me, you know. If I manage to keep my career healthy, it’s going to be really fun, because when you look back, there are certain moments I would like to remember. But playing with greats like Rafa and Roger is something I wish for years to come.
