Instagram CEO to testify before Congress

Instagram is fully cooperating with an inquiry into how a powerful Russian troll factory used the platform to promote pro-Kremlin propaganda.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s Head of Product, is one of the individuals the House Intelligence Committee will interview this week in the ongoing investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 US election.

Mosseri has worked at Facebook for almost nine years and is also a former editor of The Wall Street Journal’s social media coverage.

“Like other companies we have a responsibility to act against abuse on our platforms,” Mosseri wrote in a blog post.

“I appreciate the House Intelligence Committee’s willingness to use our tools to investigate. I look forward to the opportunity to speak truth to power.”

Facebook has also confirmed that it has shared more than 2,800 ads purchased by Russia-linked groups with the US attorney general as part of a separate inquiry.

Additionally, it has said it will begin removing accounts from Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp originating from Iran that “are linked to an activity that appears to violate US sanctions”.
