Colonial Heights officer shot, man wounded in police department parking lot

Colonial Heights police Lt. Antwan Cuffee was fatally shot at about 11:30pm local time.

Colonial Heights police confirmed Lt. Cuffee’s death on Facebook and called for prayers and privacy.

“This evening, Colonial Heights Lt. Antwan D. Cuffee was fatally shot while serving a search warrant,” they wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Lt. Cuffee’s family and all of our colleagues at the Colonial Heights Police Department.”

Also among the wounded is Trooper Scotty Tipton, a 31-year-old York County sheriff’s sergeant.

Colonial Heights police said he is “apparently stable.”

In addition to those initially hit by gunfire, the students at Williamsburg Landing Elementary and William Byrd High Schools were sheltered in place as a precaution during the incident. Both schools were closed Tuesday, but re-opened on Wednesday.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them.
